LINCOLN — A Delaware Probation and Parole officer was seriously injured while attempting to take a man into custody Thursday, authorities said.

The physical confrontation came during a probation check of Roberto Cantu, 42, of Lincoln, at his residence on Cedar Drive, Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. Jason Hatchell said. DSP also took part in the check.

Police said Mr. Cantu was searched after being found outside his home at approximately 11:07 p.m. Cpl. Hatchell said officers tried to take him into custody after suspected cocaine was found during the search.

The probation officer was injured in a lower extremity during the struggle, police added. Mr. Cantu was then taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect was additionally found with 0.64 grams of cocaine and drug paraphernalia, Cpl. Hatchell said.

The injured officer was treated for his injury at an area hospital.

Mr. Cantu was transported to Troop 4, Georgetown. He was charged with first-degree assault causing injury to a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with force, offensive touching of a law enforcement officer, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following arraignment at Justice of the Peace Court 3, Mr. Cantu was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, on a $190,200 cash bond.
