CLAYTON - Preston L. Knight, 88, of Clayton, went to be with the Lord on August 29, 2015. Preston was born on September 10, 1926, in Clayton, to the late Edward R. Knight and Jane Sylvester Knight. Upon graduation from John Bassett Moore High School, Preston joined the Navy. As one of the original plankmen of the USS St. Paul, he served as a gunner in the Pacific with Admiral Halsey's 3rd Fleet during World War II, earning two combat battle stars and a presidential citation for firing the last salvo on the Japanese mainland. After returning home, he attended the Keystone Electronic Trade School in Philadelphia. Preston worked for Sears and Roebuck Company for 35 years as a television service technician and service supervisor. He was a past councilman for the town of Clayton and served as mayor from 1957-1960. A devout Christian, he was a member of the congregation of Ewell's St. Paul United Methodist Church in Clayton. He served on the board of trustees, taught Sunday School, and led a men's prayer group. For the last several years, he was proud to be part of the honor guard of the VFW Post # 8801 of Smyrna. Preston was an avid fisherman, both saltwater and freshwater, and a hunter, winning trophies for both. He enjoyed watching professional baseball and college football, especially the Gators from the University of Florida. He was a member of the Kent County Amateur Ham Operators. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, John and Russell Knight; and his sister, Ethel Council. Preston is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Thelma Shane Knight; a sister, Mary Urian; a half-brother, Edward Knight; nieces and nephews, John (Betty Jean) Knight, Jay (Jeannie) Knight, Beverly (Allen) Adkins, Carol Kates, Jimmy (Janet) Council, Jane (Fred) Ragains, Betty (Lew) Savin, Charlotte (Tim) Jacobs, and Mark (Sandra) Urian; and numerous great-nieces and nephews, and several great-great nephews and nieces plus great-great-great nephews whom he loved very much. He also leaves a host of friends and supporters. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at 12 Noon with a visitation beginning at 11 a.m. at Ewell's St. Paul United Methodist Church in Clayton, Delaware. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ewell's St. Paul United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 266, Clayton, Delaware 19938.
