MILFORD — A portion of Del. 1 was closed for several hours Wednesday, Sept. 9, after several overhead wires and utility poles alongside the northbound section of the road came down.
According to Delaware Department of Transportation spokesperson C.L. McLeod, the damage was caused by a truck colliding with the wires. No further information was provided about the height of the wires or the cause of the impact.
The incident began around 6:30 a.m., Delaware State Police spokesperson Cpl. Raushan Rich said, when “troopers responded to Bay Road, near New Wharf Road, for a traffic hazard. They found a damaged utility pole and downed wires. Troopers determined the damage did not result from the collision.”
Both north- and southbound Del. 1 in the area were subsequently closed. Rich said both were reopened by 1:30 p.m.
“Traffic (was) significantly impacted throughout the morning,” McLeod added. “No injuries were reported, as the vehicle that is believed to have brought the wires down did not stop.”
As a result of the ensuing congestion, the Milford School District shared the following on its Facebook page around 8:30 a.m.: “Due to several accidents and road closures, please expect major delays for bus transportation this morning, particularly for routes serving Banneker and Mispillion (elementary schools).
“If you are able to find alternate transportation for your student this morning, please do so. Students who are delayed due to the accident and resulting traffic delays will not be marked late today.”
