Police identify victim in Hartly homicide case

HARTLY — Delaware State Pollice have identified the 53-year-old Marydel man as the victim in a homicide case Saturday night.

According to authorities, Michael Coffey died from injuries suffered in a road rage related shooting incident on Halltown Road. Joel Reynoso, 27, of Henderson, Maryland was arrested without incident at the scene and charged with first-degree murder and other offenses, police said.

Police determined that Mr. Reynoso was driving a vehicle on Halltown Road in an aggressive manner at approximately 6:22 p.m. and nearly struck a vehicle driven by Mr. Coffey. Both vehicles stopped an a physical altercation occurred, police said.

Police said Mr. Coffey returned to Mr. Reynoso’s vehicle to retrieve his baseball hat that fell during the altercation. According to authorities, Mr. Reynoso then fired a single round from a handgun, striking Mr. Coffey in the torso.

Troopers and citizens performed performed lifesaving measures until EMS arrived, police said. Mr. Coffey was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Mr. Reynoso was also charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, carrying a concealed firearm, first-degree reckless endangering, receiving a stolen firearm, possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited and terroristic threatening (two counts). He was arraigned by the Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $1,084,000 cash bond.
