OCEAN VIEW — Delaware State Police have identified Cheryl Beckett-Brown, 55, of Ocean View, as the homicide victim who was found dead in a home Thursday from an apparent gunshot wound.

DSP spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said James R. Meredith, 38, of Hebron, Maryland, was later taken into custody in Maryland in connection with the incident. He will be charged with second-degree murder, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and first-degree reckless endangering upon extradition to Delaware, police said.

Police said earlier they responded to a shooting report in the 35000 block of Bethany Crest at approximately 4:21 p.m. Authorities alleged that Mr. Meredith came to the house and began shooting into the residence. An assortment of shell casings were located at the scene, police said.

Police said witnesses were able to provide a description of the suspect, along with his vehicle description. Mr. Meredith was taken into custody without incident at his residence in Hebron.

An autopsy of Ms. Beckett-Brown will be performed to determine the exact cause and manner of death.

The case remains an active and ongoing investigation being conducted by the DSP Homicide Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident can call Detective B. McDerby at 741-2821. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or online at delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.
