As the calendar gets ready to turn to November, some of the downstate high school football games seem a little bigger this weekend.

Probably no showdown is bigger than Smyrna High’s homecoming matchup with Salesianum. The contest between 6-1 squads may decide who goes into the DIAA Class 3A state tournament as the favorite.

Here’s our predictions for all the local high school and college games.

Andy Walter, Delaware State News: 76-22

Tim Mastro, Delaware State News: 78-20

Glenn Frazer, 302 Sports: 79-19

Friday’s games

Polytech (1-4, 1-6) at Early College (0-3, 0-7), 5 p.m.

One of the two Kent County programs will be happy to pick up a victory in this Class 1A matchup.

AW: Polytech, 36-6; TM: Polytech, 35-12; GF: Polytech, 34-6.

First State Military (0-4, 2-6) at Indian River (2-1, 3-4), 6 p.m.

The Indians look to get back to .500 and rebound from last week’s tough two-point loss to Delmar.

AW: Indian River, 32-12; TM: Indian River, 35-14; GF: Indian River, 28-14.

Salesianum (6-1) at Smyrna (6-1), 7 p.m.

The Eagles have won their last four meetings with the Sals heading into this major Class 3A clash.

AW: Smyrna, 38-14; TM: Smyrna, 30-17; GF: Smyrna, 30-21.

Sussex Tech (1-4, 3-5) at Milford (0-4, 2-5), 7 p.m.

Ravens can still get to .500 if they break a two-game losing streak while Bucs just want a homecoming win.

AW: Sussex Tech, 27-12; TM: Sussex Tech, 20-17; GF: Sussex Tech, 24-12.

Seaford (3-1, 6-1) at Laurel (4-0, 7-0), 7 p.m.

The Blue Jays want to play the rival Bulldogs closer than they did last season in a 42-point loss.

AW: Laurel, 35-14; TM: Laurel, 42-28; GF: Laurel, 28-14.

Appoquinimink (4-3) at Cape Henlopen (4-3), 7:15 p.m.

Both squads are looking for a victory to improve their Class 3A state tournament resumes.

AW: Cape Henlopen, 28-24; TM: Cape Henlopen, 21-20; GF: Appo, 17-14.

Woodbridge (2-2, 2-5) at Lake Forest (2-2, 5-2), 7:30 p.m.

Lake is trying to find its way into the Class 2A playoffs but getting past Raiders won’t be easy.

AW: Lake Forest, 17-14; TM: Lake Forest, 28-21; GF: Lake Forest, 20-12.

Caravel (4-0, 7-0) at Delmar (3-1, 4-3), 7:30 p.m.

Bucs have been unbeatable so far but Delmar isn’t an easy place to win in this Class 2A district showdown.

AW: Caravel, 24-14; TM: Caravel, 21-14; GF: Caravel, 17-14.

Saturday’s games

Sussex Central (6-1) at St. Georges (2-4), noon

The Knights head north looking for their fourth straight victory vs. a squad they lost to a year ago.

AW: Sussex Central, 31-13; TM: Sussex Central, 21-17; GF: Sussex Central, 21-10.

Dover (5-3) at William Penn (2-5), 1 p.m.

After losing two straight, Dover needs to rebound against a squad that’s been shut out twice in a row.

AW: Dover, 38-6; TM: Dover, 35-14; GF: Dover, 21-14.

College

North Carolina Central (1-1, 5-2) at Delaware State (1-1, 4-3), 2 p.m.

The Hornets would love to get a victory on homecoming but the Eagles won’t make that an easy task.

AW: N.C. Central, 23-17; TM: N.C. Central, 28-10; GF: N.C. Central, 27-20.

Delaware (3-1 CAA, 6-1) at Elon (3-2, 5-3), 3:30 p.m.

What kind of play the Hens get from their QB — no matter who it is — may go a long way in deciding their fate.

AW: Delaware, 21-17; TM: Elon, 20-17; GF: Elon, 24-14.
