DOVER - Phyllis M. Gore passed away after a courageous four year battle with cancer, Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 in her home surrounded by her loving family. Phyllis was born on May 19, 1947 in Cambridge, Maryland, daughter of the late George and Ruby (Wilson) Marshall, where she grew up on a farm on Route 16. She attended Peach Blossom Elementary school and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1965. Her working career started at Fantasy Beauty Shop to make enough money to go roller skating. She also worked at Jim's Drive-In and as a waitress at Edgehill Pharmacy during racial riots where she was escorted to work by the National Guard. She then went on to attend the MacQueen Gibbs Willis School of Nursing where she graduated in 1968. Phyllis worked under the direction of Dr. Samuel Paul Wise III, then, worked as community health nurse at Dorchester Co. Health Dept. in Mental Health and then became a bereavement counselor with Dorchester County Health Dept in Mental Health and also a Bereavement Counselor with Dorchester Co. Hospice under Dr. Mark Pantle. She then became certified as a psychiatric nurse in 1984, and worked six months in family planning and decided to quit nursing in December of 1984. In 1985 Phyllis started working as a life insurance agent with Home Beneficial Life Ins. Co. and made the President's Million Dollar Round Table and continued until 1999 when she became a dedicated homemaker. Phyllis was a member of Three Stones Church, Lifesaver of Delmarva Blood Bank, past member of American Nurses' Association and also the Wyoming United Methodist Church, where she would call every member for their birthday, help the youth groups and all types of volunteer work with the church including soup day, food pantry enjoying God's opportunity to help others. She also was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, did knitting of shawls and hats, walked for March of Dimes and Relay for Life. Her hobbies included serving others, baking, especially pumpkin rolls, sweet potato pie and oatmeal cookies, collecting seashells, watching birds, butterflies and hummingbirds and taking grandchildren to parks and spending time with family. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 45 years Wm. Harvey Gore; two sons, Steven H. Gore and his fiancé, Stephanie A. DiLutis, William Brian Gore and his wife Elizabeth; grandchildren, Nathan H. Gore, Trevor S. Gore, Leyna G. Gore, Jessica E. Norquest and Robert E. Brown; great- granddaughter, Kaydence Elizabeth Brown; several cousins, friends and her church families. Service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, 2013 at the Calvary Assembly of God, 1141 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, where friends may gather two hours earlier. Burial will follow in Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.
