CAMDEN — Eighth-seeded Caesar Rodney High won the final three sets to post a 3-1 victory over No. 9 Indian River in the opening round of the DIAA boys’ volleyball state tournament on Tuesday evening.

The Riders avenged a five-set, regular-season loss to the Indians after winning by scores of 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19.

CR (10-6) advances to a quarterfinal match at top-seeded Salesianum (15-0). The ematch will be played on Friday, May 16, at 6 p.m. in Wilmington.

The two-time defending state champion Sals have won 46 straight matches against Delaware schools.

It's the third straight season that the Riders have won a first-round tourney match. They have lost to Sallies in the state semifinals each of the last two years.

In Tuesday's victory, CR was paced by Matthew Bayes (20 kills, 4 aces, 11 digs), Kade Gorman (14 kills, 3 blocks), Gawoodson Albert (14 kills, 10 digs), Camren Scaffedi (2 kills, 18 digs, 44 assists) and Ethan Swearingen (1 kill, 2 aces, 25 digs).

Indian River setter Zach Hearn recorded his 1,000th career assist during the second set for the Indians (13-3).

Salesianum 3, Smyrna 0: The top-seeded Sals won the match by scores of 25-13, 25-16, 25-17 over the No. 16 Eagles on Tuesday.

Smyrna, which had a four-match winning streak snapped, finishes the season with a record of 9-6.
