FELTON — A Pennsylvania man, who was attempting to fix a trailer, was killed in an accident early Saturday morning along a Felton road.

Delaware State Police said Christopher Thompson, 32, of Coatesville, Pennsylvania died after being hit by a Harrington Police cruiser being operated by an off-duty officer about 1:41 a.m. Saturday.

Mr. Thompson was driving a 2006 Dodge 3500 pick up truck and pulling a 30-foot enclosed box trailer east on Midstate Road. He had pulled onto the right shoulder of the road because of a mechanical issue with the trailer, police said.

The trailer, however, remained partially in the eastbound lane, police said.

Mr. Thompson placed a floor jack under the driver’s side of the enclosed box trailer’s tires, and as he was standing in the eastbound lane of the roadway, he was struck by the right front bumper of a fully marked 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and he was thrown onto the hood before falling back onto the roadway, police said.

Mr. Thompson, who was dressed in all dark clothing at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 47-year-old off-duty officer from the Harrington Police department was the driver.

The male operator of the Tahoe, who was properly restrained at the time of the crash, was not injured.

The name of the Harrington Police officer is being withheld but will be released at a later date, state police said.

A female passenger, who was seated in the rear passenger seat of the Dodge, was not injured in the crash.

Midstate Road was closed for approximately five hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.

“The city of Harrington family extends their deepest condolences to all involved in this tragic accident,” Harrington Police Chief Barlow stated in a press release.
