GEORGETOWN - A 30-year-old Milford man was critically injured Sunday night when struck by a GMC work truck on U.S. 9 approaching Tyndall Road, Delaware State Police said.

Authorities said the incident took place at approximately 9:16 p.m. as the truck was traveling westbound and struck a pedestrian who was walking in the road’s lane for unknown reasons. The pedestrian was struck by the front of the van, authorities said.

The van continued west bound on U.S. 9 without stopping, police said. A witness who was behind the van, called 911 to report the collision and provided a brief description of the vehicle. A trooper was on patrol in the area and observed a vehicle matching the description traveling on Taylor Mill Road. A traffic stop was initiated and damage was observed to the front of the vehicle, connecting it to the collision involving the pedestrian, police said.

The pedestrian sustained critical injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. He was later transferred to the Christiana Hospital.

The driver of the van, a 25-year-old male from Salisbury, Maryland was charged with driving without a license, leaving the scene of a personal injury collision, and failure to report a personal injury collision. He was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $2,001 cash only bond.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
