LINCOLN — An 85-year-old man died after being hit by a vehicle while walking on Marshall Street Tuesday night at approximately 11:17 p.m., Delaware State Police said.

Authorities said the incident occurred as a 2009 Pontiac Vibe, driven by a 21-year-old Lincoln female, was traveling southbound on Marshall Street just north of Johnson Road, police said. The pedestrian was on foot walking in the roadway, police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said, and as a result, the driver of the Vibe failed to see the pedestrian in the roadway causing the front bumper of her vehicle to impact the pedestrian within the southbound lane of travel.

The impact forced the pedestrian onto the hood and windshield of the vehicle before coming to rest in the southbound travel lane, police said. The driver of the Vibe came to a controlled stop and remained on scene.

The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing none of which was reflective, and was not carrying a light, police said. He was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. His name was initially withheld pending notification of next of kin. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor on his behalf, police said.

The driver of the Vibe was not injured and was properly restrained, police said. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor on her behalf.

Marshall Street was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit continued to investigate and asked anyone with information to contact Troop 7 CRU at 703-3264. No charges have been filed at this time.
