Posted

DOVER - A front seat passenger died in a single motor vehicle crash Wednesday night, Delaware State Police spokesman Senior Cpl. Jason Hatchell said.

The 64-year-old Dover man was riding in a GMC Jimmy vehicle that left Judith Roadway on a curve at approximately 6:50 p.m., authorities said. The vehicle then overturned onto its passenger side and continued to roll over until striking a large utility pole. The GMC came to rest on its roof just west of the utility pole, police said.

The passenger, who police said was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

The driver, Aaron Stevens, 61, of Dover, was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

After release from the hospital, Mr. Stevens was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, fifth offense driving under the influence, failure to remain within a single lane, and failure to have insurance card in possession. Mr. Stevens was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $16,150 cash bond.

The roadway was closed for approximately four hours while the collision was being investigated, and the roadway cleared.

The Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the incident. Police ask anyone who witnessed the collision to contact Master Cpl. Lane by calling 302-698-8457. Information may also be provided by sending a private Facebook message to the Delaware State Police or contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or online at delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.

There have been at least 57 roadway-related fatalities this year.
