GEORGETOWN – A head-on collision west of Georgetown Thursday afternoon involving a truck and a mini-van taxi claimed the life of a 73-year-old Rehoboth Beach man, Delaware State Police report.

The crash occurred June 13 at approximately 3:49 p.m. Investigation revealed a 2005 Chrysler Town & Country mini-van was eastbound on Old Furnace Road east of Rementer Road, negotiating a slight right curve.

A 2016 Ford 6-wheel box truck was westbound in the same general vicinity. For an unknown reason, the mini-van crossed into the opposing travel lane and struck the box truck head-on, state police spokesman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

The driver of the mini-van, the Rehoboth Beach man, was transported to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.  His name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.

A 21-year-old male passenger from Georgetown was transported to the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury and admitted for observation only.  The second passenger, a 20-year-old man from Georgetown was treated at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital and released with non-life threatening injuries.

The box truck operator, a 30-year-old Bridgeville man, was transported to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital and later transferred to the Christiana Hospital in serious condition.

Cpl. Jaffe said the mini-van was a registered Delaware taxi and was transporting two passengers.

Old Furnace Road in the area of Rementer Road was closed for 3.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
