MILTON — Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a moped that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old male from Lewes on Sunday.
Sgt. India Sturgis said that, at approximately 10:45 p.m., a moped traveling west on Lockerman Road approached the intersection of Coastal Highway but disregarded a “Do Not Enter” sign and began traveling south in a northbound lane of the highway.
After an unknown vehicle swerved to the right to avoid colliding with the moped, a Mazda operated by a 17-year-old male from Lincoln could not swerve in time, resulting in a head-on collision with the moped, Sgt. Sturgis said.
The moped’s operator was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene, she said. Identification is pending notification of kin.
The operator of the Mazda, who was properly restrained, was transported to an area hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.
The road was closed for approximately four hours, while the collision was investigated.
