DOVER — The nonconference slate has not been kind to the Delaware State University men’s basketball team when it faces off against a Division I team so far this season.

The Hornets dropped another nonconference contest to Binghamton 85-64 at home on Wednesday night. Delaware State fell to 2-6 overall while Binghamton improved to 4-4.

The Hornets have played six games against Division I competition so far and all have been double-digit losses. Five of those six losses were by 20 points or more.

DelState’s two wins this year have come against Cairn, a Division III school, and Georgian Court who is Division II.

“We have some veterans that should be playing a whole lot better than they’re playing,” said DSU coach Keith Walker. “It’s disappointing when you have seniors on your team not making the contributions that you think they should.”

Delaware State never led against Binghamton. The Hornets trailed 8-0 before they scored their first points.

Binghamton then converted three consecutive three-pointers on three-straight possessions to open up a 25-9 advantage, forcing a DSU timeout with 11:15 left in the first half.

The Hornets cut it to single digits at 27-18 on a Jonathan Mitchell three with 8:09 to go in the first half. But Binghamton ended the half on a 19-11 run.

Binghamton hit nine of its first 13 three-point attempts in the first half and opened up a lead as large as 22 points with 3:02 remaining in the first.

“They shot the ball very well,” “I was surprised how well they shot it but we certainly helped them out. Then we couldn’t get it going offensively early. We ran into a lot of problems with execution. We settled down and were able to execute a little better but we were in a hole too deep.”

Binghamton finished with a 12-of-25 shooting performance from behind the arc. All totaled, Binghamton shot 58.5 percent from the floor.

The Hornets were also out-rebounded 33-19 in the game.

Binghamton’s J.C. Show was the game’s top scorer with 17 points. Thomas Bruce contributed a double-double for Binghamton with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The lone bright spot for DelState was junior Simon Okolue. Okolue, a junior college transfer, was the Hornets leading scorer with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

Freshman Pinky Wiley was the only other Delaware State player in double figures with 11 points.

The Hornets were playing their second game in a row without starting point guard Kobe Gantz. Gantz is out indefinitely after suffering a leg injury against Georgian Court on Saturday.

Mitchell missed Monday’s loss at Troy with an injury but returned to the Hornets on Wednesday. He had to leave this game in the second half though after aggravating the injury.

“Once we get settled in I think we’re going to be O.K.,” Walker said. “I really do believe that. We have to get these guys to mature a little bit faster than they probably want to.”
