It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nolan David Outten on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at his home in Salisbury, MD following a long battle with Multiple Myeloma. He was born June 7, 1948, in Cambridge, MD.
Dave graduated from Cambridge High School, Class of 1966. He went on to pursue his passion for numbers, earning an Associate's Degree in Accounting and Finance from Brandywine Jr. College in Delaware in 1968, followed by a Bachelor's Degree from Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania in 1970. His knowledge of financial management led him to a long career with the State of Maryland, Deer's Head Center, 1974 until his retirement January 2005. He held several positions during his caree including Accountant Auditor, Fiscal Specialist, Nursing Home Administrator, and Assistant Superintendent. Dave was also a part-time realtor with Century 21.
His commitment to service extended beyond his civilian careers. Dave served in the United States Army 1970 -1973, stationed in Germany in the Finance Department. Years later he joined the United States Coast Guard Reserves, stationed in Ocean City, MD and Chincoteague, VA, 1984 to 2008, retiring from military service in 2008. He continued his service to military veterans as a driver for the American Legion, transporting veterans to medical appointments in Baltimore, MD and Elsmere, DE. He was a long-time member of the American Legion Post 64.
In 1984, Dave married the love of his life, Kathy, and together they shared a beautiful life filled with love and shared interests including traveling. Together they owned and operated Outten's Ice Cream Churn in Delmar, DE for several years. Dave and Kathy celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in 2024.
Dave's warmth and generosity touched many lives. He leaves behind his wife, Kathy (Fitzgerald) Outten, and many beloved family members and longtime friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Franklin Outten Jr,; his mother Alice Virginia (McCarter) Outten, brother and sister-in-law, Benjamin Franklin Outten III and Sheridan Outten.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 11 am at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, DE. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service. Interment with military honors followed at Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron, MD.
