NEW CASTLE — A 53-year-old woman was critically injured in a fire Tuesday, the state fire marshal said.
The blaze, reported shortly before 4 a.m., occurred at the Quality Inn & Suites Skyways, 147 N. DuPont Highway, near the New Castle County Airport, according to spokesman Michael Chionchio. The Wilmington Manor Fire Co. arrived to smoke coming from a ground floor room.
Firefighters rescued one person from inside the burning room, Mr. Chionchio said. New Castle County paramedics resuscitated the victim and rushed her to the ChristianaCare, Newark. She was then transferred to Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Upland, Pennsylvania, in critical condition and suffering from burns and smoke inhalation, authorities said.
State fire investigators are searching for the fire’s origin and cause. Damage was estimated at $200,000, Mr. Chionchio said.
There were no other injuries, but several guests were relocated to different rooms.
