New brews: Milton's Dogfish introducing Spring Variety Pack, apple-influenced whiskey

MILTON — Dogfish Head is hoping to warm up its customers with a series of product launches this month.

Dogfish’s brewery announced Feb. 8 the debut of a spring-themed 12-pack of 12-ounce cans. In addition, on Wednesday, Dogfish Head Distilling Co. shared the planned release of a whiskey three years in the making.

Brewing officials said they wanted to “bring the heat” to this snowy season with the release of the Spring Variety Pack. The assortment contains four “off-centered ales,” including fan favorites 60 Minute IPA, SeaQuench Ale and Namaste. It also highlights the limited-time return of one of the brewery’s most frequently requested beers, Festina Pêche, as a variety pack exclusive.

The 12-pack is available at Dogfish Head’s coastal Delaware locations and on shelves nationwide.

The 60 Minute IPA has 6% alcohol by volume and is brewed with Northwest hops added continuously throughout the beer’s 60-minute boil time.

SeaQuench contains 4.9% alcohol by volume and is a sour mashup of different styles — Kolsch, Gose and Berliner Weiss — brewed in sequence with black limes, lime juice and sea salt.

With 4.8% alcohol by volume, Namaste is a Belgian-style white ale. It’s Dogfish Head’s take on a classic beer, brewed with dried organic orange slices, fresh-cut lemon grass and a bit of coriander.

The fourth beer in the pack, Festina Pêche, is returning after many requests from social media. It has 4.5% alcohol by volume and is classified as a neo-Berliner Weiss. Brewers describe it as a fruit-forward session sour brewed with fresh peaches for a tart yet slightly sweet beer, with bright notes of peach pits and rinds.

“Social media followers, Dogfish fans everywhere, we heard you loud and clear,” said Sam Calagione, Dogfish Head founder and brewer. “The last time we released Festina Pêche was 2018, and ever since, drinkers from across the country have been advocating for its return. I love that we’re finally able to give them that with this variety pack.

“Personally, I can’t wait to pick up a Spring Variety Pack, make myself a nice ‘Namas-tina’ beer cocktail — that’s equal parts Festina and Namaste for a beach party in a glass — and daydream of the sunshine,” he added.

For whiskey drinkers looking to warm up, Dogfish Head Distilling Co. products are now available in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.

The new, limited-edition whiskey is dubbed Alternate Takes Volume 3: Whiskey Finished in Apple Brandy & Apple Cider Barrels.

“Alternate Takes Volume 3 has truly been a labor of love for our distilling team. It’s been in the works for more than three years,” said Mr. Calagione.

The liquor is 45% alcohol by volume. It was distilled from 100% pale malt and finished in Dogfish Head’s American oak apple brandy barrels and French oak apple cider barrels from Angry Orchard.

“Our Alternate Takes whiskey series is an ode of sorts to the mad chemistry of R&D distilling,” said Mr. Calagione. “We approach these limited-edition spirits — and really, every creative moment at Dogfish — with a thirst to push new and out-of-the-ordinary ideas to their furthest limits and fullest potentials. Just like music, our off-centered concoctions are boundless, and each alternate take is another piece of the artistic journey.”

The company recently gained the ability to sell its spirits in New York.

“I can’t wait to share this delicious dram with folks everywhere, especially with you spirits lovers in New York. It will be awesome to finally be able to send our full portfolio of house-made spirits to our neighbors up north, and I’m excited to hear their thoughts on our distillery’s offerings,” Mr. Calagione said.
