Emory, 90 COLUMBIA, S.C. - Nelson "Red" Grier Emory, 90, died Sunday, October 13, 2013, in Columbia, S.C. Born in Frederica, Del., December 5, 1922, he was the only child of Eugene Grier and Myrtle Alexander Emory. Nelson attended Penn State for two years before joining the US Merchant Marine in 1942 where he served as an engineer during WWII in the Atlantic. He said, "It didn't feel right to be in school during the war." After 16 years of service in the Merchant Marine, Nelson received a commission as a LT in the US Coast Guard and served until 1979, retiring as a Captain. He then returned to the Merchant Marine for four years to complete two full careers serving his country. Throughout his careers Captain Emory and his wife raised three daughters and were blessed with nine grandchildren. He was an extraordinary man with a vast array of knowledge, skills and abilities. A Renaissance man with an artistic flair, he enjoyed boating, mechanics, antiques, drafting and photography. After retiring he designed and built a home on Folly Beach and then Johns Island that became gathering places for their family. They also traveled the world, visiting 37 countries on six continents. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Marjorie Mason Emory of Milford, Del. He is survived by his three daughters, Laura Emory of Austin, Texas; Lisa Kent (Norman) of Columbia, S.C.; and Marnie Drummond (Rob) of Columbia, S.C.; nine grandchildren, Blair Drummond, Lee Drummond (Beth), Emily Drummond, John Drummond, Mason Drummond, Virginia Hurst (Graham), David Kent, Samuel Kent and Will Kent. Also surviving are cousins, Joyce Kucek and Sally Seger of Dover, Del., and Kay Lockwood of Monument, Colo.
