SELBYVILLE — A higher level of holiday help will be provided by Mountaire Farms this month, as is prepares to host its signature Thanksgiving for Thousands giveback program.
Employees and volunteers will pack a record 26,000 meal boxes for needy families on Delmarva and in North Carolina this year.
“Everyone at Mountaire looks forward to this event every year and the partnerships we’ve built in the community over the last 26 years,” said Mountaire Farms President Phillip Plylar. “To see everyone come together to help out families in need is really such a blessing. We’re grateful to be able to give back during this event and throughout the year.”
Mountaire’s Delmarva event will be held Nov. 22 at the poultry company’s warehouse on Railroad Avenue in Selbyville. Packing is scheduled from 8 a.m. to about noon, and distribution will follow the next day at Crossroad Community Church, west of Georgetown, also starting at 8, said Mountaire Farms’ spokeswoman Catherine Bassett.
Boxes will be loaded onto refrigerated trucks and transported to the church. The groups receiving the boxes have been registered and given instructions on pickup and safe handling.
Mountaire anticipates that more than 150 volunteers at the Selbyville event will pack 10,000 boxes, each containing a complete meal for a family of four — a Mountaire roaster chicken, corn, green beans, stuffing, gravy, cranberries and brownies.
Volunteer spots are available here. Volunteers must be 16 years or older, and COVID-19 protocols will be in place.
Individuals interested in getting a box for a family in need can also take part in a drive-thru distribution event Nov. 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at five locations:
In North Carolina, employees from Mountaire’s Lumber Bridge processing plant will be packing 10,000 boxes Nov. 20 to be distributed to churches and nonprofit groups on the same day.
Additionally, Mountaire’s Siler City, North Carolina, employees will be packing 5,000 boxes Nov. 13, with distribution the same day to registered churches and nonprofit agencies.
And for the first time, Mountaire’s program includes packing 1,000 boxes through its employees in Statesville, North Carolina, on Nov. 16.
