MILLVILLE — Water samples taken Oct. 23 from the Bethany Crest community, near Millville, show that the levels of the group of chemicals known as PFAS are now below that of the Environmental Protection Agency’s health advisory, therefore rendering the water safe for residents to use, state officials said Monday.

A sample drawn Oct. 11 as part of a proactive screening of public water sources by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control had shown that the chemical amounts were near the advisory level, sparking quick action from DNREC and the Division of Public Health.

PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are man-made chemicals used in consumer and industry products that often find their way into the bodies of people and wildlife. They can cause health problems with long-term exposure, so residents were advised to use bottled water until levels returned to normal.

Results also indicated that, while PFAS were detected in other wells and public water systems within a 1-mile radius of the Bethany Crest community, all were below EPA requirements.

DNREC’s Remediation Section is investigating potential sources of the contamination.
