GUMBORO – Authorities Thursday identified the 80-year-old Millsboro woman who died Wednesday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash near Gumboro.

Joann E. Smith died from injuries sustained in the crash, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:34 p.m. March 20 when the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Ms. Smith left the eastbound lane on Lowes Crossing Road just east of Pear Tree Road and struck a large tree.

Ms. Smith was transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury where she was later pronounced dead, said Cpl. Jaffe.

State police investigation revealed Ms. Smith was properly restrained with seat-belts.

The crash remains under investigation by Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Lowes Crossing Road was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
