MILFORD — Prior to Friday night, Woodbridge’s football program hadn’t lost a game since Nov. 28, 2015.

With a 20-6 victory in front of the home crowd at Briggs Stadium, Milford (4-2) put an end to the 18-game win streak.

“It feels great just to win. These guys, they’ve earned it. They have worked hard all year. All we wanted to do is win and show people we can run with the best teams in the state and we just did,” Milford head coach Shaun Strickland said.

The Bucs out-manned Woodbridge in the trenches and the defensive unit came up with timely plays to seal the two-touchdown victory.

“That’s a great football team. We controlled the line of scrimmage all night, defense controlled the line of scrimmage,” Strickland said. “If we can run the ball up and down the field and run 9-10 minutes off the clock, that’s how we’re going to win games.”

Milford’s offense gave senior running back David Bowman a heavy workload, and he met the challenge by scoring three touchdowns to tie the school’s all-time touchdown record (53).

“Our offense, at first, started off using me as a decoy,” Bowman said. “But once he ran me, I told him I was going to be a workhorse tonight. He saw what I was doing and he kept running me.”

The defense shut the Blue Raiders’ offense out completely, as Woodbridge’s lone touchdown came on a kick-off return TD from junior Richard Massey in the third quarter.

Milford forced punts on the Blue Raiders’ first three offensive possessions, and the Bucs offense wasted no time taking advantage of the short field.

Taking over for their first possession with the ball at the Woodbridge 40-yard line, Milford drove down the field and scored on a third and goal situation.

Bowman’s first touchdown of the night put the Bucs ahead early, 7-0.

With soggy conditions for most of the night, the score remained 7-0 until the 5:18 mark of the third quarter.

A 43-yard touchdown run from Bowman and the extra point from junior placekicker Jonathan Gaglione put the Bucs ahead 14-0.

Woodbridge’s Richard Massey put the Blue Raiders on the board on the ensuing kick-off for their lone score of the night. The failed extra point attempt left the score 14-6 with 5:05 left in the third quarter.

Milford’s defensive unit forced a pair of turnover on downs and forced a fumble to seal the victory in the second half.

“We prepped all week. We’ve been watching film since last year, so we were prepared for what we saw last year, we were prepared for everything we’ve seen this year,” Strickland said.

Bowman’s 23-yard touchdown run with 11:11 to play in the fourth quarter tied the school’s all-time record and put the game all but out of reach for the struggling Woodbridge offense.

A forced fumble and recovery for the Bucs with 1:36 to play allowed starting quarterback Tayone’ Matthews to line up in victory formation.

Three kneel downs cemented the Milford victory.

Although he’s just one touchdown shy of the school record, it isn’t something Bowman is focused on at this point in the season.

“It feels good to tie it, and know that if I break it I could be the No. 1 running back coming out of Milford,” he said. “But, it’s not my No. 1 interest, because we’ve got four games left and we’re trying to get to the playoffs. That’s my goal.”
