Midterms launch wave of historic firsts for some states — and for the nation
SUMMARY: This midterm election will be remembered not just for the stunning number of losses Democrats handed to President Donald Trump and Republicans but for a wave of historic firsts across the country. There were cheers and happy tears at election parties from New Mexico to Georgia Tuesday night once it became clear voters had elected the country’s first Black female governor, the first Native American female governor and other history-making candidates. Most are Democrats, but the GOP has also broken some new ground. While some of these candidates have avoided focusing on the inherent historic value of their race, gender, religion or sexual orientation, some voters’ rights advocates are celebrating how the electorate has expanded.

Democrats win full control of more state governments and the Texas House
SUMMARY: Democrats made sweeping gains in state governments in the midterm elections, taking control of several legislatures and shifting the balance of power across battleground and historically Republican-leaning states. The party took full control of both statehouse chambers and of the governor's office in five states where they've been sharing power. They also won the majority in the Texas state House. The wins put pressure on the party to answer to an electorate angry over the price of gas, inflation, affordable housing and the rising cost of living. State governments shape a wide array of policies affecting everyday lives. That includes tax rates and abortion rights, school choice and education funding, and data center development.

Ravens are getting veteran QB Jacoby Brissett from the Cardinals, AP source says
SUMMARY: Veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett is heading from the Arizona Cardinals to the Baltimore Ravens, according to a person with knowledge of the trade. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn't been completed. Brissett started eight games for Arizona this season but was demoted to third-string quarterback after Gardner Minshew stepped in and led the Cardinals to a 33-30 comeback victory at Dallas. The 4-4 Ravens desperately needed a quarterback after losing Lamar Jackson to a thumb injury and backup Tyler Huntley to a toe injury. Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano will start for the Ravens against Jacksonville on Thursday night

Commanders dealing with injuries on the defensive line ahead of matchup with Rams
SUMMARY: The injuries for the Commanders keep on coming. Defensive linemen Javon Kinlaw and Daron Payne were both placed on injured reserve, with their seasons likely both over, coach Dan Quinn said Wednesday. Kinlaw had knee surgery, while Payne has a foot injury. And yet, Washington’s defensive line has been a mostly consistent unit so far this year, even as the defense has had issues elsewhere. The run defense has been consistent and the pass rush has been steadily improving throughout the season.

Chiefs stick with embattled Harrison Butker for Jets game after another costly miss in Denver
SUMMARY: The Kansas City Chiefs are sticking with kicker Harrison Butker despite recent struggles. Coach Andy Reid confirmed Wednesday that Butker will play against the New York Jets on Sunday. Last weekend, Butker missed a crucial 54-yard field goal during a late-game collapse against the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs lost 28-24 after leading 24-13 in the fourth quarter. Butker has missed 16 kicks since the start of last season, the most in the NFL, which prompted the Chiefs to sign former All-Pro Justin Tucker to the practice squad last week. Meanwhile, cornerback Mansoor Delane was back at practice after missing the game in Denver because of a shoulder injury.

Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson is in concussion protocol and uncertain to play vs. Chiefs
SUMMARY: New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson is in the concussion protocol and his availability for Sunday against Kansas City uncertain. Coach Aaron Glenn said Wednesday that Wilson is day to day after being injured in the closing moments of New York's 38-33 loss to Las Vegas last Sunday. Running back Breece Hall is moving closer to a return from a quadriceps injury that has sidelined him five games.
