Janeese Lewis George is Washington's next mayor. Now come the challenges, starting with Trump
SUMMARY: Janeese Lewis George has been elected the new mayor of Washington, D.C., after running nearly unopposed in Tuesday’s election. She joins a small group of democratic socialist municipal leaders. One challenge she faces is President Donald Trump, who has criticized her as a threat to the city. Lewis George plans to address D.C.’s affordability crisis, which she says has worsened under Trump’s administration. She will also navigate Congress’s authority over city affairs, which can impact local legislation and budgets. Her tenure could be influenced by the outcome of upcoming House and Senate elections.

Midterms launch wave of historic firsts for some states — and for the nation
SUMMARY: This midterm election will be remembered not just for the stunning number of losses Democrats handed to President Donald Trump and Republicans but for a wave of historic firsts across the country. There were cheers and happy tears at election parties from New Mexico to Georgia Tuesday night once it became clear voters had elected the country’s first Black female governor, the first Native American female governor and other history-making candidates. Most are Democrats, but the GOP has also broken some new ground. While some of these candidates have avoided focusing on the inherent historic value of their race, gender, religion or sexual orientation, some voters’ rights advocates are celebrating how the electorate has expanded.

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in Pennsylvania on Election Day
SUMMARY: In Pennsylvania, some U.S. House seats currently held by Republicans are being closely watched for their potential to turn blue. In three of those races, President Donald Trump outperformed the Republican House winners in the 2024 election, a warning sign that without his name on the ballot, incumbents now seeking reelection may struggle to generate the Republican turnout needed to stay in office. Democrats need to win three more seats in the midterm elections than they did in 2024 to take the majority back from Republicans.

'Very important' evidence found miles from Learjet crash site in Florida, investigator says
SUMMARY: Investigators say they found a piece of the Learjet that slammed into the ground in Florida miles from the crash site. Nine people on board were killed when the jet crashed into a residential area of Greenacres, near West Palm Beach, on Sunday afternoon. National Transportation Safety Board member Tom Chapman said Tuesday that most of the left elevator, which is part of the tail, was found in three pieces between 1.3 miles and 3.8 miles away. Chapman says this confirms the plane was breaking apart before it hit the ground.

Democrats make sweeping gains at the state level, taking control of legislatures and shifting power
SUMMARY: Democrats made sweeping gains in state governments in the midterm elections, taking control of several legislatures and shifting the balance of power across battleground and historically Republican-leaning states. The party took full control in Minnesota and Wisconsin and could pick up more states to earn additional trifectas. That means control of both statehouse chambers and of the governor's office. The wins put pressure on the party to answer to an electorate angry over the price of gas, inflation, affordable housing and the rising cost of living. State governments shape a wide array of policies affecting everyday lives. That included tax rates and abortion rights, school choice and education funding, and data center development.
