Judge cites 'weaponization' in tossing charges for ex-FBI agents accused of lying about Hunter Biden
SUMMARY: A federal judge in Washington has dismissed a criminal complaint against two former FBI officials accused of lying to Congress about Hunter Biden, citing what he calls “weaponization” of President Donald Trump's Justice Department. The judge Monday said the investigation that produced the charges was overtly political. The Justice Department may still have an opportunity to pursue a grand jury indictment against the ex-FBI officials. The case accused the former officials of misleading Congress about their knowledge of efforts to investigate a laptop the Justice Department says was dropped off by Joe Biden’s son at a Delaware computer repair shop in 2019. The case sought to echo grievances by Trump and his Republican allies.

Democratic socialist the heavy favorite as nation's capital elects its 1st new mayor in 12 years
SUMMARY: Voters in the nation's capital are electing their first new mayor in 12 years, and a self-described democratic socialist is heavily favored to win. Janeese Lewis George is a Washington, D.C., city council member running against DC Statehood Green Party candidate Robert Gross, independent Rhonda Hamilton, and 11 write-ins. Lewis George won the Democratic primary in June with 54% of the vote. The city is 75% Democratic and has only elected Democratic mayors since 1973. The only question is whether a Lewis George win would bring her back onto President Donald Trump’s radar. The next mayor will replace Muriel Bowser, who is completing three four-year terms.

Child dies of measles in New York's first such death in 30 years
SUMMARY: A child in rural northern New York has died after contracting measles. It marks the state’s first death from the disease in 30 years. New York officials said Monday that the child died in Lewis County, about 93 miles north of Syracuse. The U.S. stopped the domestic spread of measles in 2000 by maintaining high vaccination rates, but they have fallen in recent years to below the 95% coverage needed to prevent outbreaks of the viral disease. In neighboring Pennsylvania, state health officials have recorded five deaths this year and are investigating a possible sixth.

After key win over Eagles, Commanders look to reduce penalties that have plagued them all season
SUMMARY: The Washington Commanders are coming off a 17-point win over the Eagles on Sunday night that perhaps kept the competitive portion of their season alive. They still have familiar problems they’d like to clean up. Coach Dan Quinn says his team has plenty of work to do to eliminate penalties, false starts in particular. Washington had back-to-back false starts before a missed field goal in the first quarter against Philadelphia. That contributed to the Commanders spotting the Eagles a 10-0 lead. The Commanders are 2-4-1 this season despite a plus-7 turnover differential that's tied for the best in the NFL.

Jackson’s injury might have existential repercussions for this era of Ravens football. He has only one year left on his contract, with a huge expected cap hit. More NFL players are wearing Guardian Caps during games. The benefits are still up for debate
SUMMARY: Arizona Cardinals left tackle Jayden Williams is among a growing number of NFL players who have worn Guardian Caps during games. These soft helmet covers are believed to help reduce head injuries. Williams says he wants extra protection, asking, "Why not have it?" However, Chris Nowinski, CEO of the Concussion & CTE Foundation, warns the NFL might be overstating the cap's benefits. He says it hasn't been proven to reduce concussions significantly. The NFL's chief medical officer, Dr. Allen Sills, says the cap is just one tool to combat head injuries. Some players, like Saints receiver Chris Olave, choose to wear it for added safety.
