McCarthy: Panhandlers on the streets are dangerous

Posted

Recently, the Daily State News asked if panhandlers on the streets and at intersections are dangers. Absolutely they are. Not only do panhandlers put themselves in danger, but they create distractions to all drivers and put those who stop to give handouts at risk, as well.

Volunteer fire departments and civic and school groups used to seek donations at stoplights. That dangerous practice was stopped. So should street panhandling.

That said, I’m not sure the regulation being considered in Dover is the answer. This is not just a Dover problem. This seems, rather, to be an issue that the General Assembly should take on, so there is a uniform approach statewide.
