HARTLY — A 37-year-old Maryland man died after being shot during an altercation at a residence early Wednesday, authorities said.
Before being struck by gunfire, according to Delaware State Police, the man allegedly attacked four men with a knife, leaving two with life-threatening injuries.
The knife-wielding man, of Ridgely, was shot in the leg with a shotgun by a person he had attacked, DSP spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said. The wounded man was transported to Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus, where he was pronounced dead.
Troopers had been dispatched to the scene in the 700 block of Proctors Purchase Road at 4:29 a.m. following a 911 call reporting a person shot and multiple persons stabbed, Cpl. Fournier said. Troopers escorted EMS into the home, where numerous individuals were injured.
Cpl. Fournier said preliminary investigation determined that several people were in the home watching television and playing games through the night. The man who later died became enraged and attacked the other occupants with a knife, he said.
Two Hartly men ages 56 and 30 were transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. Two Maryland residents ages 34 and 53 suffered non-life threatening injuries, police said.
DSP said investigation continues, and asked anyone with information on the case to contact Sgt. S. Yeich by calling 741-2703. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or online.
