FEDERALSBURG, Md. - Mary JoAnne Yerkes Nagel, 81, died Thursday evening, April 24, 2014 with her family at her side at her home outside of Federalsburg, Maryland. JoAnne was born on September 23, 1932 in Cambridge, Maryland to Milton Duffield and Lily Beatrice Yerkes. Her father was a feed store owner and her mother a homemaker. After their marriage in 1930, they moved to Laurel, Delaware where JoAnne attended school, graduating from the University of Delaware in 1954 with a degree in early childhood education from the school of home economics. She earned her Masters in Education from the University of Maryland. JoAnne enjoyed roller skating and she met Myers Nagel at the roller rink in Seaford, Delaware, marrying him and moving to Federalsburg in 1955 where she taught elementary school for 30 years, 25 of those years as a Kindergarten teacher; all of those years for Caroline County Public Schools. She was an active member of the Omicron chapter of ADK for 45 years, the Caroline Chapter No. 62 of the Eastern Star for 50 years and a long-standing member of Union United Methodist Church where she was a certified Lay Speaker, sang in the choir, helped to start and played in the bell choir, led many children's messages during Sunday morning service, and served as chairman on many church committees with her last position as Chairman of Missions. She was instrumental in helping to create the New Friends of Christian Women's group over twenty years ago. JoAnne is survived by her three children and their spouses, Bea and Brian Liu of Virginia Beach, Va., Margie and Jerry Tubbs of Collierville, Tenn., and Milton and Tina Nagel of Federalsburg; and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Myers; and sister, Margaret Tanyer. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 1, 2014 at the Framptom Funeral Home in Federalsburg with the Reverend David Heistand and Reverend Dan Gedman officiating. Interment will follow in Hill Crest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 30, 2014 and 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2014. There will be an Eastern Star Service on Wednesday evening.
