Meeks Torbert, 80 HARRINGTON - Mary Catherine Meeks Torbert died Saturday, May 27, 2013 at the Country Rest Home, Greenwood. Mrs. Torbert was born June 17, 1932 in Henderson, Md. the daughter of the late David Rhuark and Mary Catherine Bullock Meeks. She graduated from Greensboro High School in 1949 and began working at Playtex in Dover. In July 1950 Mary Meeks married Barton Torbert. She would visit with the dairy farmers' wives while Barton tested milk. In 1951, she became a full time housewife and mother. She was a devoted mother, always being involved in her children's activities. Some of her favorite jobs were serving as a Sunday School helper, a Little League team mother, a 4-H leader, room mother at school and transporter. She also worked at milking and feeding dairy cows as well as cleaning up after them and driving tractors in the field. You would also see her helping out in the show ring at the Delaware State Fair when she was needed. Her favorite singer was Loretta Lynn. She could hear a song and go to the piano and play it. When neighbors needed a babysitter, she was always available. She also substituted at the W.T. Chipman School and was a recess aide at Lake Forest South Elementary for a while. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Hall Barton Torbert; a son Hall B. Torbert, Jr and a brother G. Allan Meeks. She is survived by a daughter Hope A. Torbert Minner and her husband Preston, of Houston; a granddaughter Tawnya R. Minner Squier and her companion Clifford Knotts, Jr. of Harrington; a grandson Daryl L. Minner and his wife Amy, of Harrington; a great grandson Cameron Michael Squier of Harrington; two great granddaughters Gracie Mae and Elsie Elizabeth Minner, of Harrington; one brother-in-law; 3 sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews; as well as her very good neighbors Mr. Hawkins, D.J. and Big Mike. Memorial services will be held at 7 pm on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the McKnatt, Carpenter & Baker Funeral Home, 50 Commerce Street, Harrington where friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to either the Harrington Fire Company, 20 Clark Street, Harrington, DE 19952 or to the Kent County 4-H, c/o Doug Crouse, 69 Transportation Circle, Dover, DE 19901.
