Marion Howe Mitchell

DOVER - Marion Howe Mitchell passed away July 9, 2015 at home. She was born in Elizabeth, N.J. to the late Lewis Van der Veer Hobbs and Miriam Merritt Hobbs. She was preceded in death by husbands Oakus B. Howe and William P. Mitchell; and sisters Elizabeth Hobbs and Helen Hobbs Baker. She is survived by daughters, Lorraine Howe Moniz and husband Matthew of Sunnyvale, Calif.; Connie Howe Waldrop and husband Robert of Lenexa Kan.; granddaughters, Elizabeth O'Shea and husband David; Karen Smith and husband Erich; a niece and nephews. Marion became interested in photography at a very young age and became a self-employed professional photographer while living in Sussex County. Her work included portraits, weddings, yearbooks, children, commercial or whatever anyone wanted photographed. She received many awards and recognition for both her photographs and her service to the Photographic Society of America. Her photos have appeared on calendars as well as acquired and hung locally including in the Family Court Building in Dover. Her love of photography took her all over the world. Delaware State University honored her with a one woman show of 80 of her salon photos in their art gallery. Over the years, Marion was a member of the Rehoboth Art League, Dover Camera Club, Delaware Camera Club in Wilmington and a 50 plus year member of the Photographic Society of America. Marion was a founding member of Westminster Village Retirement Community and took an active part in its planning and development. In 1991, she moved into her cottage complete with a darkroom. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Christ Episcopal Church, 501 S. State Street, Dover. A Celebration of her Life will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Westminster Village Assisted Living Building, 1167 McKee Road, Dover. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 1374, Dover, Del. 19903 or Delaware Hospice (Dover), 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, Del. 19901.
