Margaret Jane Jacobs

SMYRNA - Margaret Jane Jacobs, of Smyrna, passed away at home with her family by her side on Saturday March 23, 2013. She was born in Smyrna, the daughter of the late Francis and Margaret O'Neill. She was a 1946 graduate of John Bassett Moore High School, Smyrna, and a 1950 graduate of the University of Delaware. Mrs. Jacobs taught seventh-grade English for 37 years, serving most of her career in the Smyrna School District. She retired in 1991. After her retirement, she traveled extensively. She also enjoyed playing golf, bridge, and needlepoint. She had formerly served as a volunteer with Old Dover Days, and was an avid follower of the Citizens Hose Company Marching Band of Smyrna. Her greatest love was spending time with her family, and she enjoyed the family tradition of having lunch together each Friday. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, John Robert Jacobs; and a brother, Bud O'Neill. She is survived by two children, Catherine Stewart, and D.J. Kelly and her husband Dick; two grandchildren, Holly Soroko and her husband Steve, all of Smyrna, Del. and Joseph Kelly and his wife Candace, of Clayton, Del.; and four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Nicholas Soroko; and Norah and Amelia Kelly. Services will be held 12 p.m. Friday March 29, 2013 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, where friends may call at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Citizens Hose Co. Marching Band, PO Box 97, Smyrna, DE 19977, or to a charity of your choice.
