DOVER — A 41-year-old man was shot in the leg while standing near the Elks Lodge at 217 N. Kirkwood Street as a vehicle passed by early Monday morning, the Dover Police Department said.
The incident between 12:25 and 12:40 a.m. was the city’s ninth shooting in 45 days, according to a count through police news releases. There have been 14 shootings in Dover in 2015, including four homicides.
According to spokesman Lt. Jason Pires, the victim said he had no interaction with anyone before approximately three shots were fired from inside a vehicle. The suspect and make and model of a sedan were unknown, police said.
Authorities said the shots were fired in the direction of the wounded man and others outside the Elks Lodge.
Police said the man was driven to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital by a family member after the shooting.
Police went to the hospital to investigate, authorities said.
No suspect description or information was available, police said. The nature of the crime was described as second-degree assault and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.
The investigation is ongoing, and Dover Police said anyone with information can call 736-7111. Callers can remain anonymous.
