Man shot eight times in Dover, in critical condition

DOVER - A 20-year-old Dover area man was critically injured after being struck eight times by gunfire in the 100 block of South New Street on Thursday, authorities said.

Dover police spokesman Sgt. Mark Hoffman said the man was found lying in the roadway as officers arrived to the scene at after multiple 911 calls around 9:57 p.m. He was wounded in the upper extremities and torso.

Officers applied first aid to the man until the arrival of medics who then transported him to Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus. He was conscious when officers  arrived and spoke briefly to them, Sgt. Hoffman said. 

The man remained hospitalized in critical condition, Sgt. Hoffman said Friday morning.

Sgt. Hoffman said officers spoke to witnesses in the area. 

Police asked anyone with information on the case to call the Dover Police Department at 302-736-7130. Callers may remain anonymous. Tips may also be submitted to law enforcement through Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333 or online at delaware.crimestoppersweb.com; a cash reward is possible for information leading to an arrest.

The incident was the second in the 100 block of South New Street in just less than a month. A 23-year-old man was struck in the right forearm on May 11, according to police.

Dover has seen six injurious shooting incidents since April 16, leaving seven people injured. Also, two arrests were made in connection to 2021 shootings.

The string of incidents began on April 16 when a 26-year-old man was shot in front of Irish Mike’s Old Town Pub on Loockerman Street. An arrest was later made.

The shooting at Irish Mike’s was the first of 10 shooting incidents in Dover in a 27-day span, some of which involved no injuries.

On May 7, a 27-year-old female was shot in the leg in the area of South Governors Avenue and Loockerman Street.

Two males, ages 12 and 17, were shot on May 10 in the 400 block of Barrister Place.

A 32-year-old man suffered minor injuries when shot on White Oak Road on June 3.
