DOVER — The wildly popular Pokemon Go game took an unfortunate turn for a 20-year-old man last weekend when he was robbed after approaching who he thought were other players, authorities said.

Dover Police said the victim was playing the game in the area of Legislative Avenue when three unidentified black males called out to him at 3 a.m. on Saturday.

Authorities said the victim believed the suspects were playing Pokemon Go as well, and went over to them.

Upon contact with the supposed gamers, the victim was assaulted and robbed of a gold necklace and an undisclosed amount of cash from his pockets.

The assailants then fled toward Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

While “there’s no telling for sure” whether the suspects lured the victim through the game, “ ... it’s certainly possible,” Dover Police spokesman Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said.

When announcing the incident on Tuesday afternoon, Dover Police encouraged “game players to be aware of your surroundings and alert at all times.

“Players should avoid playing near roadways and in areas you are not familiar with, especially at night or in areas not heavily populated.”

The game-related crime was the first of its kind in Dover, Cpl. Hoffman said, noting “this is the first serious incident we have seen by a player.”

Also, Cpl. Hoffman said, there have been no cases of distracted game playing pedestrians or other incidents “that we have had to deal with.”
