Man killed in Hartly incident identified

HARTLY — The Delaware State Police have identified the individual shot and killed at a residence in the Hartly area Wednesday as John H. Carter III, of Ridgely, Maryland.

Police said Mr. Carter, 37, was killed at a home in the 700 block of Proctors Purchase Road. According to authorities, police were dispatched to the area after a 911 call at approximately 4:29 a.m.

Police said several individuals were in the home watching TV and playing games throughout the night when Mr. Carter became enraged and began attacking the other occupants with a knife. At some point during the altercation, one of the victims retrieved a shotgun and shot the male subject in the leg.

Mr. Carter was transported by EMS to Bayhealth Kent General where he was pronounced dead.

A 56-year-old man from Hartly and a 30-year-old man from Hartly were transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, while a 34-year-old male from Centreville, Maryland, and a 53-year-old male from Sudlersville, Maryland, were admitted to a hospital with injuries judged not to be life-threatening. The 53-year-old was released soon after.
