REHOBOTH BEACH — A 26-year-old Greenwood man was arrested Wednesday on weapon and traffic charges after he struck a Delaware State Police patrol vehicle and was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol, spokeswoman Master Cpl. Heather Pepper said.
Troopers were initially dispatched to Coastal Highway about 6:16 p.m. for a reckless-driving complaint about a Chevrolet Silverado. During an attempt to stop the truck, it struck the rear of a DSP vehicle, police said.
After the collision, the Silverado’s driver, Randy Rangel, continued on before stopping at the entrance to Bethany Blues BBQ restaurant. He was ordered out of the car and displayed signs of driving under the influence of alcohol, Cpl. Pepper said.
Located in the pickup were a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 mm handgun and a magazine with 11 rounds, she said. A computer inquiry revealed that Mr. Rangel does not have a permit to carry a concealed deadly weapon.
The suspect was charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a firearm while under the influence, driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and multiple traffic offenses. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court and issued an $11,650 unsecured bond.
Mr. Rangel was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, on a $500 secured bond for an active warrant out of Sussex County Court of Common Pleas.
