MAGNOLIA — An unidentified driver died in a head-on collision Friday, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Sgt. India Sturgis said.
The person was operating a Chrysler minivan on northbound Bay Road, just south of Trap Shooters Road, at approximately 7:25 p.m., when the vehicle left the road for unknown reasons and entered the grass median. The vehicle then went into the southbound lanes and caused a head-on collision with a Mercedes GLK, police said.
Both vehicles caught fire upon impact, and a passerby safely removed the driver and a passenger from the Mercedes, Sgt. Sturgis said.
The driver of the Chrysler was pronounced dead at the scene.
All occupants were wearing seat belts, police said. Identification of the victim was pending as of Saturday.
The driver of the Mercedes, a 58-year-old Lewes man, was transported to an area hospital and admitted in critical condition.
The passenger of the Mercedes, a 59-year-old Lewes woman, was also transported to an area hospital, where she was admitted for non-life-threatening injuries.
There were two dogs inside the Mercedes, and one died. The Office of Animal Welfare responded to the scene to take possession of both.
The road was closed for approximately three hours, while the scene was investigated and cleared.
The Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate and asked witnesses to contact Master Cpl. W. Booth at 302-698-8451, send a message via the state police Facebook page or contact Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
