Madeline Wiebel Spitzfaden

HARTLY - Madeline Wiebel Spitzfaden passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014. She was 96. Mrs. Spitzfaden was born June 1, 1917 in Newark, New Jersey to the late Leopold Schomburg and Emelia Michel Schomburg. She worked for 20 years for the State of Delaware as a lecturer and tour guide for the Delaware State Museum. Mrs. Spitzfaden was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Dover, Capitol Grange, the Marine Corp League Women's Auxiliary, where she had held the position of President, the DAV and had also been a 4-H leader. She enjoyed traveling, knitting and crocheting. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her 1st husband of 50 years, Frederick Wiebel in 1990, her 2nd husband of 21 years, Louis Spitzfaden in 2013; brother, Harvey Schomburg; and son-in-law, Albert LaMarche. She is survived by her children and extended family, Frederick Wiebel and his wife Lupe, of El Paso, Texas, Lois Wiebel LaMarche of Dover, Kathleen Wiebel Koch and her husband Daniel, of Wilmington, Gail Phillips and her husband Wendell, of Jacksonville, Ark, Donna Ludlam and her husband Larry of Rincon, Ga., and Patricia Kepfer and her husband Richard, of Hartly; brother, George Schomburg of Lindenhurst, N.Y.; sixteen grandchildren; twenty four great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Christ Episcopal Church, 501 S. State Street, Dover. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (rt.10), Dover. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family extends a heartfelt thanks to her caretakers for their loving and professional care. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the SPCA, 32 Shelter Circle, Camden, DE 19934 or Christ Episcopal Church, 501 S. State Street, Dover, 19901.
