MILFORD - Luella M. Derrickson, age 99, of Milford, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Heritage Assisted Living. She was born on January 24, 1915 in Slaughter Neck, daughter of the late Edgar and Ella (Carey) Bennett. Mrs. Derrickson graduated from Milford High School in 1932. After meeting the love of her life, Howard J. Derrickson, they married in 1938. They settled in Rehoboth Beach to begin their life together which lasted 55 years. In 1940, they relocated to Lewes and opened a retail store called Corner Cut Rate. The business flourished and became a great success until their retirement in 1979. Mrs. Derrickson was a very active member of Bethel United Methodist Church and enjoyed being involved in the Mary Martha Circle. She was an exceptional cook who made delicious meals. In her spare time, she could be found crocheting, doing needle point, and enjoying the outdoors. Most importantly, she loved taking care of her family. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Derrickson was preceded in death by her husband, Howard J. Derrickson in 1993; and a son, Glenn Derrickson in 2012. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Vinal, Hammond and Fred Bennett. She is survived by her son, Howard J. Derrickson, Jr. of New York City, N.Y.; a daughter, Myra Hudson and her husband Jim of Georgetown; a sister, Eleanor Warner of Milford; two grandchildren, Carrie Hudson of Lincoln, and Jamie Emory of Milford; two great-grandchildren, Savannah and Hunter Conaway of Lincoln; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services with the Rev. Dr. Charles Moyer officiating, will be Saturday, April 26, 2014, at 11 a.m., at Slaughter Neck United Methodist Church, 23221 Argo's Corner Road, Milford, where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow the services in the adjacent churchyard. Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Derrickson's memory to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
