Mary E. Lewis Hawkins

RALEIGH, N.C. - Mary Elizabeth Lewis Hawkins, 90, died May 6, 2007, at Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Bucktown, a farming community near Cambridge, on May 28, 1916. She was the daughter of the late Fred and Nellie Condon Lewis.

Mrs. Hawkins was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph "Pete" Hawkins; by four brothers, Norman, Donald, Milford and Ralph Lewis, all of Maryland; and two daughters, Mary Ann Droppleman and Sara Elizabeth Hawkins.

Surviving are a son, Thomas Bernard Hawkins of Raleigh and his friend Jay Sanders; and a daughter, Molly Jean Freeman and husband, Jake Freeman of Raleigh. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Paige Munsey Diaz, Leslie Ann Pless and Patrick J. Hawkins; by two stepgrandchildren, Suson VonLehmden and Marijake Caprell; and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Hawkins met her husband, who was in Cambridge at a CC Camp, and after they married, she moved with him back to his hometown, Tazewell, Va. They remained there for about 40 years and were members of Tazewell Baptist Church. Mary was owner-operator of the Martingale Restaurant in Tazewell and Pete was postmaster.

After retirement she and Pete moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C. After Pete died in 1982, she moved to Raleigh to be close to her children. She lived at Capital Towers for many years prior to moving to Sunrise Assisted Living at North Hills in 2005.

She was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church in Raleigh where "Mary"s meatloaf" is still an offering at the Wednesday night church dinners. She loved giving parties, cooking for teas and receptions, enjoying good conversation, spending time with her family, but also enjoyed being quiet and reading.

In accordance with her wishes, her ashes will be placed beside her husband"s ashes at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell.

A celebration of her life will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, at Trinity Baptist Church in Raleigh.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one"s choice. Arrangements by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home.
