EDITORS/NEWS DIRECTORS:

The FIFA Club World Cup comes to the United States this year and will run from June 14 until a champion is crowned on July 13 at MetLife Stadium.

The revamped 32-team tournament features teams from around the world playing in a format similar to the FIFA World Cup. There will be 12 teams from Europe, six from South America and others from Asia, Africa, North and Central America and Oceania, as well as from the host United States.

Inter Miami and the Seattle Sounders are the two American-based teams playing in the event.

The teams are divided into eight groups of four, with each team playing three matches in a round-robin format. The top two teams from each group advance to a 16-team knockout stage. That stage continues until a championship is determined.

There will be 63 games over the span of 29 days.

The Club World Cup launched as an eight-team FIFA tournament in 2000, then resumed on an annual basis in 2005 as a replacement for the Intercontinental Cup, played each year from 1960-2004 between the winners of the UEFA Champions Cup/Champions League and South America's Copa Libertadores.

This guide lists players with U.S. ties, details on where the games will be held, and other information.

HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT THAN THE WORLD CUP?

The World Cup, played every four years since 1930 (except for cancellations in 1942 and 1946 caused by World War II), is contested by national teams. The Club World Cup will be played by top club teams — Lionel Messi of Argentina is expected to play for Major League Soccer's Inter Miami.

WHERE DO I WATCH?

You can watch in the United States on DAZN and TNT Sports. All 63 fixtures will be streamed live, free of charge on DAZN globally. Also, TNT Sports has sublicensed right to 24 matches on its cable networks that include TNT, TBS, and truTV. That includes the group stage, knockout stages, and the final.

Yes! Messi, arguably the greatest soccer player ever, is on track to play for Inter Miami. WHAT IS AT STAKE?

A nice trophy and plenty of bragging rights (especially in Europe).

FIFA says the new Club World Cup trophy boasts a 24-carat gold-plated finish and intricate laser-engraved inscriptions on both sides. The inscriptions include a world map and the names of all 211 FIFA Member Associations and the six confederations. The trophy will be engraved with: “To those who hold this trophy, history belongs to you! You are witness to a moment in time that represents the pinnacle of club football, bestowed upon few but celebrated by many.”

___

WHO NORMALLY WINS?

The Club World Cup was designed to be held very four years in part a test event for the World Cup. That is why the 2025 edition is taking place in the United States, ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The previous version of the Club World Cup was dominated by European clubs, who won 16 teams. The other four were won by clubs from South America.

Manchester City, the 2023 champion, and Real Madrid are the co-favorites to win the tournament this year with 9-2 odds, according the BetMGM.
