Local roundup: Zapata, Barr pace Smyrna girls to North win

Smyrna High tallied six first-half goals en route to a 9-1 Henlopen North girls’ soccer win over Polytech on a rainy Thursday night.

Sophomore Desiree Zapata netted four goals and an assist for her fifth hat trick of the season for the Eagles (5-1).

Smyrna also got three goals from Kelly Barr and one each from Jade Balon (2 assists) and Marlayna Pennington.

Megan Popp scored the Panthers’ goal.

Caesar Rodney 8, Milford 0: Gabrielle Davis scored the Riders’ first three goals before finishing with five in the Henlopen North victory.

Olivia Hudson added a goal and four assists with Alexandra Lenoir and Sarah Cummings adding CR’s other goals. The Riders outshot the Buccaneers, 22-1.

Delmarva Christian 1, Lake Forest 1: Paige West’s goal off a direct free kick in the 55th minute gave the Royals the tie with the Spartans.

Lake Forest’s goal also came on a free kick, from Haydan Parker in the 21st minute. The Spartans held advantages of 16-8 in shots and 12-5 in corner kicks as Kasie Burd had four saves for Lake Forest.

Girls’ lacrosse

Polytech 11, Caesar Rodney 10: The Panthers outscored the Riders, 6-4, in the second half to pull out the win on Wednesday night at DE Turf.

Molly Kenney (4 goals, 3 assists), Elizabeth Szell (3 goals) and Madison Todd (2 goals, 1 assist) all led Polytech, which outshot CR, 23-19. The Panthers evened their record at 2-2.

Alexis Riley tallied three goals and an assist for the Riders while Elle Roberts (2 assists), Rylie Faircloth and Elise Hensley (1 assist) all scored twice.
