Local Roundup: Wuest, Dean and Rosser in quarterfinals at Beast; Wesley men win

Three downstate wrestlers are in the quarterfinals of the Beast of the East tournament after the first day of action wrapped up on Saturday night at the University of Delaware’s Bob Carpenter Center.

Smyrna High’s Tony Wuest, Caesar Rodney High’s Jackson Dean and Milford High’s Robbie Rosser are all still alive in the 25th edition of the tournament.

Wuest, who was Delaware’s best individual finisher in the event last year in third, is the No. 2 seed at 195 pounds. He won his round of 16 match via a 5-2 decision over Robert Spezza of Bethlehem Catholic’s (Pa.).

Dean (138 pounds) and Rosser (120 pounds) are both in the quarterfinals for the first time in their careers.

Dean earned a 9-5 decision over Northampton’s (Pa.) Devon Britton to reach the quarterfinals. Rosser meanwhile won a 6-4 decision in the round of 16 against Gene Qoudala of St. Pauls School (Md.).

The championship round is scheduled for today at 3 p.m.

Men’s basketball

Wesley 105, Hood 94: The Wolverines advanced to the championship game of the Cregger Invitational.

Wesley’s 105 points were the most scored by the Wolverines since they put up 106 points against Mary Washington on Jan. 15, 2011.

Brandon Lewis set season-highs in points and rebounds. Lewis tallied 28 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Lewis was 11-of-19 shooting, draining two of his three 3-point attempts and 4-of-8 free throws. He also added two assists

Brian Cameron also notched 28 points for the Wolverines. Eight of 10 of Cameron’s makes were from three-point range. Cameron grabbed six rebounds, stole the ball twice, dished out two assists and blocked a shot.

Evan Anderson recorded 23 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Anderson was 6-of-7 in free throws and hit five 3-pointers.

Paul Clemons and Mychal Stefanides each registered seven points while Stefanides collected six assists, three steals and block.

Off the bench, George Cook handed out a game-high eight assists with six points.

The Wolverines (3-5) face the tournament hosts Roanoke today. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Women’s basketball

Maryland Eastern Shore 97, Wesley 30: The Wolverines fell to a Division I opponent.

Stacey O’Neale led the Wolverines with 11 points, knocking down three 3-pointers. Shelby Johnson tallied seven points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Tiyanna Gibbs picked up five points. Gibbs and Monshea Newsome-Murray collected three rebounds.

Bairesha Gill-Miles paced the Hawks with 18 points.
