Local roundup: Woodbridge girls fall to Caravel; Cape Henlopen girls win in OT

Caravel Academy was too much for Woodbridge High on Thursday night, rolling to a 70-52 win over the Blue Raiders in girls’ basketball.

The defending DIAA state champion Buccaneers are now 10-4, with only one of their losses coming against an in-state school.

Woodbridge falls to 12-3 after losing to Caravel for the third time in the last two seasons. Payton Keeler (17 points), Reghan Robinson (15 points, 5 assists) and Tianna Neal (11 points, 11 rebounds, 3 blocks), all led the Blue Raiders, who trailed 19-9 after the first quarter.

Smyrna 77, Middletown 58: The Eagles (11-4) finished the game on a 24-12 run to close out the victory.

Sophomore Kai Burnette netted a career-high 26 points for Smyrna, which also got double-figure scoring from Jayde Rivera (15) and Amiyah Ellerbe (14).

Cape Henlopen 56, Stephen Decatur 51, OT: The Vikings out-scored Decatur, 7-2, in overtime to pull out the victory.

Freshman Amalia Fruchtman sank a pair of foul shots with just 0.1 seconds left in regulation to force OT. Cape Henlopen, which improved to 14-2, led 25-7 after the first quarter.

Laurel 43, Milford 33: The Bulldogs built a 17-10 halftime advantage before taking the win.

Carlie Venables (16) and Z’Monnie Farlow (14) combined to lead Laurel.
Isabella Watson and Tatiyanna Davis tallied 10 points apiece for the Buccaneers.

St. Georges 40, Caesar Rodney 38: The Hawks edged the Riders in a non-conference contest.

Early College 58, Seaford 38: The Hornets raised their record to 12-2 with the win on Wednesday.

Boys’ basketball

Caravel 69, Laurel 62: The Buccaneers out-scored the Bulldogs , 27-11, in the fourth quarter to rally for the victory.

Laurel was paced by Corey Mumford (19), Dontarius Jones (16), Kylse Wilson (13) and Joel Parker (11).

Sussex Central 54, Lake Forest 38: The Golden Knights started the game on a 20-4 run before downing the Spartans.

Central got a team-high 12 points from Kyle Custis.

The Spartans were led by 20 points from Calif Spencer and 16 from Darius Miller.

Woodbridge 61, McKean 45: The Blue Raiders snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory.

Salisbury School, Md. 73, Delmarva Christian 65: Salisbury built an early eight-point lead before downing the Royals.

Wrestling

Red Lion 42, Indian River 37: The Lions posted a pin at 285 pounds to earn the victory.

The Indians received pins from Samuel Lopez-Mendiola (106 pounds), Tyler McManus (120), Steven Mayfield (126), Evan Forjan (138) and Angel Mora Salas (150).

Parkside, Md. 63, Delmar 18: Kane Johnson (175) and Bryce Johnson (190) picked up back-to-back pins for the Wildcats in the setback.

Sussex Central 79, Polytech 0: Gabe Cannon (175) had an 18-second pin before Ivan Neal (190) followed with a 20-second fall to highlight the Golden Knights’ North win on Wednesday.

Sussex Central registered 12 pins in the match. Also winning by fall were Austen Decker (106), Malachi Stratton (113), Chase Murray (120), Evan Cordrey (126), John Rovillard (132), Talan Savage (138), Andrew Long (144), Cody Layfield (157), Jadyn Craig (165), Gabe Cannon (175), Ivan Neal (190) and Ryder Robinson (215).

College basketball

MEN, Monmouth 70, Delaware 62: For the second week in a row, the Blue Hens fell to one of the CAA’s worst teams on the road.

Delaware (4-7 CAA, 12-12 overall) led by as many as 11 points in the first half but trailed most of the second half against the CAA newcomer Hawks (2-9 CAA, 3-20 overall).

The Hens, who were up 29-25 at halftime, have lost their last six road games. Jameer Nelson Jr. tallied a game-high 20 points with Jyare Davis finishing with 15. Christian Ray led all players with 11 rebounds.
