In a game that got off to a wild start, Wesley College rolled to a 30-9 victory over Pine Manor in baseball on Monday afternoon.
The Gators erupted for eight runs in the first inning only to have the Wolverines answer with 11 runs in the bottom of the inning.
Wesley (2-10-1) then capped off the victory with 12 runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Wolverines finished with 19 hits and took advantage of seven errors and 12 walks by Pine Manor.
All nine Wesley starters drove in a run, reached base and scored while the Wolverines batted around in the first, fourth and sixth innings. Jordan Marucci (5 runs, 3 RBI) and William Foster (5 RBI, 2 doubles) each recorded four hits.
Jason Boc plated four runs and scored four times with three hits. John Joines, William Musser and Alexander Weber tallied a pair of hits respectively. Musser came around to score five times while Weber added three runs scored and three RBI.
Pitcher Darin Matthews picked up his first win of the season in relief of Dominick Williams.
College lacrosse
WOMEN, Hartford 20, Delaware State 2: The Hawks netted 12 first-half goals before downing the Hornets.
Olivia Sommerville and Emmy McGill tallied DelState’s goals with Portia Wiggins making six saves.
College softball
Hens’ Piening wins CAA award: Delaware junior Sarah Piening was named the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
Piening went 2-0 with a 0.48 ERA in three appearances during the Blue Hens’ home-opening weekend. She allowed one run on seven hits in a complete-game victory during Saturday’s 6-1 win over Mount St. Mary’s, and then gave up one unearned run in two-thirds of an inning in relief during the second game vs. the Mountaineers.
Piening then fired the 16th no-hitter in school history during Sunday’s 1-0 win over Coppin State. She walked just one batter, while retiring the other 21 batters she faced.
Additionally, Piening tied her career-high by striking out seven batters in both of her starts on the weekend.
Piening (7-6) leads the squad and ranks eighth in the CAA with a 2.73 earned run average.
College field hockey
UD puts 15 on all-academic squad: Fifteen University of Delaware field hockey student-athletes were named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad.
The team recognizes individuals who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher during the first semester of the 2018-19 academic year.
Honorees include Conner Allen, Kiki Bink, Lizzie Gaebel, Lisa Giezeman, Becca Harbert, Grace Hoepfner, Sarah Horgan, Ashley Iannuzzi, Sarah Ianuzzi, Emily Kresho, Grace Miller, Michaela Scanlon, Ellie Schepens, Femke Strien and Bo van Hunnik. Bink and Giezeman finish their careers as four-year recipients of the award.
In five of the last six seasons, Delaware had at least a dozen student-athletes recognized.
