The second-seeded Wesley College field hockey team made their two shots on goal count as both found the back of the net to capture a 2-1 win over the top-seeded Gwynedd Mercy Griffins in the first-ever Atlantic East Conference Championship.
After conceding the first goal of the game early in the second half, Jessica Behornar scored off a penalty corner play from a feed from Kasey Fry to tie the game at one in the 53rd minute.
On their fourth penalty corner of the game, Kaila Hindt found Fry once again, who set up Behornar to blast it past the Gwynedd Mercy keeper to give Wesley the 2-1 lead in the 61st minute of the game.
Gwynedd Mercy turned the pressure up, looking to tie the game up. In the 68th minute of the game, Wesley conceded a penalty stroke. Kathryn Lehman’s penalty stroke was blocked by Sidney Knott’s stick and pushed over the cage.
The defense kept Gwynedd off the board in the remaining two minutes of the game to lock up the conference title.
In goal, Knott led the defense with seven saves. Gwynedd Mercy held the 15-2 advantage in shots and 13-4 edge in penalty corners, but Wesley played great team defense to limit the No. 7 team in the region to a single goal.
After the game, Behornar was named the Atlantic East Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player.
It is the fourth conference championship in program history and first since the 2004 season.
Wesley (9-10, 3-2 Atlantic East) will now wait for a potential Pool B bid into the NCAA Tournament.
