Local roundup: Wesley men fall to AEC opponent Marymount 67-47

Wesley College was held 36 points under its per-game scoring average in dropping a 67-47 decision to Marymount in Atlantic East Conference men’s basketball on Wednesday night.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Wolverines (6-5 AEC, 12-12 overall), whose 47 points were a season low.

Wesley, which averages 83 points per game, shot just 26.5 percent (13-of-49) from the game, including 6-of-21 from three-point range. The Wolverines were also just 15-of-24 from the foul line and committed 21 turnovers.

Brian Cameron (11 points) and Evan Anderson (10) paced Wesley, which trailed 33-20 at halftime.

The Wolverines finish the regular season by hosting Neumann at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

WOMEN, Marymount 64, Wesley 31: The Wolverines fell behind, 24-7, in the first quarter before dropping the Atlantic East Conference contest.

Wesley’s 31-point total was its second-lowest of the season. The Wolverines’ netted a season-low 25 points in their first meeting with Marymount (19-5).

Angelique Gathers netted a team-high 14 points for Wesley (0-11 AEC, 5-19 overall).

College track & field

Wesley now No. 8 in poll: Wesley College leaped 17 spots to No. 8 in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III Indoor Track & Field Top poll.

The Wolverines are the highest-ranked team in the Top 25 in the Mideast Region.

Wesley’s jump was largely based on Thomas Kalieta, Jr.’s performance in the 400-meter dash at the Navy Select Invitational on Feb. 8. Kalieta set a new school record and won the 400 with a time of 47.97 seconds.

That time ranks third in the nation behind two converted times on a flat track.

Kai Cole continues to lead the nation in the 60-meter dash with his win at the Ursinus Collegeville Classic on Jan. 19 finishing in 6.82 seconds, 0.05 seconds faster than the next best time.

Cole and Kalieta are in a three-way tie for ninth place in the 200-meter dash with their 21.74-second effort at the Navy Invitational on Jan. 26.

Boys’ basketball

St. Thomas More 51, Salisbury Christian, Md. 48: The Ravens raised their record to 8-9 after snapping a three-game losing streak.

Delmar 52, Worcester Prep, Md. 31: The Wildcats (13-6) built a 41-17 lead after three quarters before winning their fifth game in a row.

Isaiah Kane netted a game-high 12 points for Delmar.

Smyrna 72, Polytech 69: The Eagles out-scored the Panthers, 23-20, in overtime to notch the Henlopen North win on Tuesday.

Smyrna rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit.

Indian River 88, Milford 72: Jamier Felton netted 34 points while Michael Meehan had 30 in the Indians’ Henlopen South win on Tuesday.

Antonio Jones added 16 points for IR, which out-scored the Buccaneers, 28-14, in the second quarter to overcome an early five-point deficit.

Nicholas Sivels tallied 17 points for Milford.

Seaford 65, Sussex Academy 37: Da’Jion Garrison scored 20 points to pace the Blue Jays to the South win on Tuesday.

Kejuantae Cherry-West (11) and Jayden Palmer (10) also scored in double figures for Seaford.

Fadens Amisial scored 10 points to lead Sussex Academy.

Girls’ basketball

St. Thomas More 59, Salisbury Christian, Md. 25: The Ravens improved to 13-2 after winning their third game in a row.

St. Georges 58, Smyrna 34: Jayla Smith scored 26 of the Eagles’ 34 points in the non-conference loss.
