Local roundup: Walkoff wins lift Hornets to softball sweep over Coppin

The Delaware State softball team posted two walk-off wins to sweep Coppin State in a MEAC North doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

The Hornets won two of the three games in the division-opening series for both teams.

DSU won the first game, 4-3, with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning and took the nightcap, 3-2, in 10 innings.

In the opener, Hornet catcher Jaelyn Baker singled in the game-winning run in the last of the seventh. Jasmine Melgoza doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jade King.

After a walk to Jordan Casey, Baker lined a shot to the fence in left field to score Melgoza with the winning run.

The Eagles tied the game at 3-3 with three runs in the top of the fourth. The big blow was a two-run homer by Milford High product Nia Bowe.

In the nightcap, winning pitcher Tiffany Diao scored Sabrina Quarles on a sacrifice fly with none out in the 10th for the winning run.

Under extra inning rules, Quarles was placed on second base to start the inning. She moved to third on an error.

Diao pitched all 10 innings to earn the win for DSU, allowing just five hits and two runs. King was 3-for-4 in the nightcap.

Washington College 5, Wesley 3: The Wolverines rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh before falling short.

Megan DiRubbio (Polytech) went 3-for-5 with two RBI for Wesley (11-9), which also got two hits from both Karina Cardona and Kelly Palmer. The Wolverines left the bases loaded when the contest ended, stranding a total of 14 runners on base in the game.

Hens drop two to Drexel: Delaware dropped a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader at Drexel, falling to the Dragons 5-4 and 5-2.

In the opener, Delaware (11-15, 0-3 CAA) mustered just two hits through the first five innings, but rallied in the final two frames. After Miranda O’Donald singled and Hanna Garber doubled to open the sixth, both runners crossed the plate when Halle Kisamore laced a single to centerfield.

In the seventh. Chayanna Gallardo ripped a two-run double to left as the Hens closed within a run. However, Drexel retired the next three UD batters to hold on for the win.

Trailing 3-0 in the nightcap, Brooke Glanden (Lake Forest) smacked her fourth home run of the season in the top of the fourth. Garber singled, stole second and scored on a double by Glanden in the top of the sixth, but the Hens would not get closer.

Garber and Glanden each finished with three hits on the day for Delaware.

College baseball

James Madison 7, Delaware 4: The Dukes scored all seven of their runs in the second inning before holding off the Blue Hens in the CAA contest.

Delaware (1-2 CAA, 5-16 overall) answered with three runs in the third but could only manage another run in the ninth as JMU won the weekend series, 2-1.

Jordan Hutchins (Dover) and Jack Goan each contributed two hits and an RBI. Hutchins also stole two bases.

Coppin State 10, Delaware State 5: The Eagles jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the third before downing the Hornets in a MEAC North matchup.

DelState was out-hit, 14-6, in the contest. Miquel Rivera (Polytech) had a two-run double in the third for the Hornets while Mark Herron (2-for-4) homered in the bottom of the seventh.

Reliever Robert Shorts allowed only two hits while striking out five in 3.2 innings.

College bowling

Hornets fall in MEAC: The third-seeded Delaware State bowling team fell short in its bid for the MEAC Tournament title after losing to No. 1 seed Maryland-Eastern Shore 2-0 in the semifinals on Sunday.

MDES opened with a 914-894 win in the traditional team game as Alexis Neuer led Delaware State with a 202.

The Hawks held the early advantage in the Baker pinfall format, but Delaware State rolled a 213 in the fourth game to take the lead. MDES rebounded , though, turning in a 209 in the final game to take the second game 921-881.

Neuer was named to the All-Tournament team after topping all players with a total pinfall of 1013 for a five-game average of 202.6.

The Hornets posted a 3-2 record in the tournament, with both losses to Maryland-Eastern Shore.
