Local roundup: Vikings fall to 0-2 with road loss at William Penn

Cape Henlopen High fell to 0-2 with a 27-6 nonconference road football loss at William Penn High Saturday afternoon.

The Vikings scored a first quarter touchdown by recovering a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown, but the Colonials scored 20 unanswered points to pull away with their first win of the season.

William Penn recorded a passing touchdown, two rushing touchdowns and returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown.

The Vikings seek their first win next Friday night at Milford High at 7 p.m.

Parkside, Md. 42, Delmar 7: The Wildcats dropped to 1-1 with Saturday afternoon’s out-of-state road loss to the Rams.

The Wildcats will have their home opener next Friday night against Queen Anne’s, Md.

Boys’ soccer

Tower Hill 3, Seaford 0: The Hillers picked up its third consecutive shutout to begin the season.

Seaford dropped to 1-2 with the nonconference home loss.

Volleyball

Indian River 3, Red Lion Christian 0: The Indians picked up their third straight sweep with a nonconference win.

IR picked up set wins of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-14.

Led by 20 kills from Raychel Ehlers and 19 assists from Camryn Ehlers, the Indians improved to 3-1.

College

Field hockey

Wesley 7, Hood 0: Madison Cook and Kaila Hindt each picked up hat tricks as the Wolverines improved to 3-1 with a road shutout of Hood College.

Margaret Johnson added one goal and one assist in the team’s second 7-0 shutout of the season.

Men’s soccer

Delaware 2, Northeastern 2: Forward Rex Twum and defender Tim Hummrich each scored goals as the Hens (1-1-2) tied Northeastern after two overtime periods.

Goalkeeper Renan Thomazo made two saves on Northeastern’s four shots on goal.

Volleyball

Wesley 3, Goucher 1: After starting the season with five straight losses, the Wolverines picked up its fifth straight match win with the tri-meet victory over Goucher.

Misericordia 3, Wesley 0: In Game 2 of the tri-meet, Misericordia snapped Wesley’s match streak in straight sets 25-23, 25-20 and 25-16.

Wesley combined for six aces, 29 kills and 62 digs in the loss.

Delaware 3, Northern Illinois 0: The Blue Hens roll to a sweep over Northern Illinois, improving to 8-1, in the UIW Cardinal Classic in San Antonio.

Ezgi Basaranlar led the Hens with 17 assists, while Maria Bellinger recorded a team-high 12 kills and Andie Hanus had 10 digs.

Lafayette 3, Delaware State 0: Lafayette picked up set wins of 25-10, 27-25 and 25-14 in its sweep of the Hornets.

Delaware State 3, Merrimack 0: The Hornets recovered from the first game to pick up a 25-18, 25-21, 25-7 sweep of Merrimack at the LaFayette Tournament.
